WEYMOUTH Hockey Club’s Susie Stone and Ian Metcalfe helped England enjoy an unbeaten record at the Home Nations Tournament.

Stone, representing the Ladies’ Over-40s, scored a goal as England smashed Wales 10-1 and then played a part in the 3-0 defeat of host nation Scotland to clinch the Home Nations crown.

Day two saw England take on both Wales and Scotland again, but in friendly matches, and Stone and her team-mates remained undefeated with two more victories.

Metcalfe meanwhile, playing for the Men’s Over-55s, also tasted glory as England drew with Wales 0-0 before beating Scotland 2-0 with seasider Metcalfe on the scoresheet.

Reflecting on the event, Stone, who has once again been selected for the England Masters this season, said: “Overall it was a tremendous team performance. But having said that I was pleased with my own performance and fitness levels.

“I had worked very hard at this in the eight weeks leading up to the tournament and I felt sharp on the pitch.”

Metcalfe said: “I was on the edge of making the squad last year so it’s been a great honour to be selected and play for my country this year.”

Both Stone and Metcalfe are on the lookout for sponsorship to help them represent their country in matches further afield.

Stone added: “The Ladies Masters team beat Croatia 8-0 recently but, although being selected to play, I couldn’t go on the trip due to finance so if there are any local businesses who would be interested in doing some sponsorship it would be a great help.”
