Rosie helps Huskies silence students

PLYMOUTH UNIVERSITY 25 WEYMOUTH HUSKIES 36

WEYMOUTH Huskies’ first season in the Exeter & District League continues to be a successful one after they saw off Plymouth University.

Rosie Flaherty started the run of points to put Weymouth six ahead in the opening minutes with three consecutive lay-ups, and they never relinquished their advantage.

However, silly mistakes by Weymouth played into the Plymouth side’s hands and helped cut the difference to two, but more strong offence in the second quarter helped Nicole Cornish and Jo Cox increase Weymouth’s lead by a further six points.

That allowed the Huskies to dominate the game and two consecutive three-pointers saw their lead extended to 13 and they finished as they started as confident lay-ups from Remy Nurse and Flaherty at the end of the fourth quarter guided them to victory.

Huskies: Flaherty (14 points, MVP), Moore (6), Nurse (6), Cox (4), Cornish (4), Johnstone (2), Blackwood, Osborne, Dean.

WEYMOUTH HUSKIES 38 EXETER POLICE 75

EVEN though the Huskies were on a high after convincingly beating Plymouth University, they were brought back to earth with a bump by joint-leaders Exeter Police.

Two successful shots from Carly Dean, after being fouled, put Weymouth on the scoreboard in the first quarter and some determined lay-ups by Jo Cox, Jayne Guppy and Nicole Cornish handed Huskies the lead at the end of the first quarter.

However, it only got worse from there and Exeter jumped into a 13-point half-time lead, despite Rosie Moore pulling three back in the closing seconds of the second quarter.

A change in defence for the Weymouth side and an inspiring half-time talk from coach Che Osborne helped the Huskies get back in the game.

Some aggressive rebounding by Rosie Flaherty and quick passing enabled Cox and Ele Johnstone to take advantage of a fast break, but they could not make a dent in the score as they tied the third quarter at 8-8.

The final quarter was a completely different story as Exeter Police ran riot to close out a 75-38 result.

Huskies: Cox (12 points, MVP), Cornish (8), Moore (7), Guppy (4), Johnstone (4), Nurse (2), Dean (1), Osborne, Blackwood, Flaherty.
