WEYMOUTH-based sports writer Steve Palmer has again been recognised as Britain’s foremost betting journalist after scooping a second successive gong at the annual SJA Sports Journalism Awards.

Having won the inaugural Betting Writer of the Year award 12 months ago, Palmer, 31, successfully defended his crown.

A panel of judges, comprising sports editors of national newspapers, described Palmer’s writing during the year as “a joy to read, informative, witty and honest” as the awards were presented at a gala dinner at The Brewery in London, organised by the Sports Journalists’ Association (SJA).

Many big names from the world of sport, including former England football manager Terry Venables, were on hand to present prizes at the Oscars-style ceremony.

The awards are regarded as the ultimate accolade in sports journalism and cricket legend Michael Atherton, who works for The Times, claimed the coveted Sports Writer of the Year title.

Palmer, who has been a Racing Post journalist for 10 years, successfully tipped a golfer to win at odds of 80-1 last July and a Sunday column detailing his betting exploits each week has built a huge following within the punting community.

The former Wey Valley School pupil recently moved back to Weymouth after 14 years away and now works from his office in the town.
