SOUTHAMPTON RAVENS 59

ANDY Steel scored 25 points as Weymouth Cowboys shot down the Ravens to record their first away win of the season.

The Southampton outfit took the tip but it was the Cowboys who draw first blood when Dan Campbell made the first basket of the game very early on.

A foul added an extra free throw, which Campbell took with ease, before another infringement, this time on Sam Dodge, allowed the visitors to stretch their lead to five.

By then the Ravens wanted a piece of the action but great use of zone defence saw Wey-mouth limit the hosts to just eight points for the first quarter.

And with Steel producing several great lay-ups the Cowboys soon found themselves 15 points to the good as the game entered the second period, which followed a similar pattern.

A couple of controversial calls from the referee could have upset their rhythm but Weymouth shrugged them off and continued to press, pulling 39-18 clear by halfway.

There appeared no way back for the Ravens but they adopted a more physical approach in the second half and it paid dividends as they went on to force several turnovers to slowly creep back into the game.

At one stage the gap was cut to just four points but good rebounding from Rob Legg and Dodge and a much-needed time-out from coach Alex Fuhrmann soon inspired the Cowboys to regain their composure and go on to secure the victory 69-59.

Fuhrmann, said: “This was a great run out for the lads.

“We showed in the first half what we have been building on and although in the second we made some decisions which nearly saw us lose our grip on the game, we still managed to pull out the win regardless, which was very pleasing.”
