THE newly-named Go Spike Beach League, named after the Volleyball England campaign to get more people involved in the sport, got off to a flying start this week with lively matches in both the A and B series.

The competitions took place on the new permanent courts on Weymouth Beach which have been donated by Volleyball England and for the rest of the week are free for the general public to use. The A competition came down to a final between Dom Cosserat and Rob Semmence and Elliott Sawyer and Stephen Williamson.

Williamson and Sawyer led in the early stages and seemed to be in the driving seat with a 16-11 lead brought about by a combination of strong attacks from Williamson and athletic back court play from Sawyer.

However, with the light fading, Semmence and Cosserat started using all their experience and attacking power to hit back.

They tied the scores up at 20-20 before a couple of sensational rallies saw Cosserat and Semmence take the next two points for a 22-20 win.

The B series saw 2011’s A series champion Terry Oldrid team up with his 13-year-old daughter Chloe and they fought their way to the final to play Mat Palmer and Hayden Francis.

This again was a tight final with the Oldrid family coming through as 21-17 winners.

The teams return to the beach next Tuesday from 6pm and any new players will be very welcome.

Before the Go Spike League matches begin, there will be coaching from 5-6pm for under-16 players led by Level Two coach and this week’s finalist Elliott Sawyer.
