DAVE Lane landed a new club record at Weymouth Angling Society’s annual open shore competition.

Thirty-four anglers took part in the Abbotsbury event and fished a calm sea with an easterly breeze.

The overall winner was Lane, whose two plaice and a tub gurnard weighed in at 6lb 3½oz.

That was enough to secure the £200 first prize but he also received an additional £64 for capturing the best flatfish, which was a plaice weighing 5lb 50z – a new club record.

Second place overall was Dave Chidzoy from West Bay with six plaice totalling 4lb 3oz.

Third place went to Honiton angler Terry Hartnell (4lb), with Chris Erscott (2lb 10oz) and Phil Cheeseman (2lb 6oz) fourth and fifth respectively.

Meanwhile, Lane has again been selected to fish for England this year in the Home Internationals in Kent.

He previously represented his country in 2009 at Aberystwyth in Wales, and again in 2010 at Peterhead in Scotland.

He helped the team strike gold on both occasions and will be looking to make it a hat-trick in 2012.

Lane puts his success down to the thriving junior section at Weymouth Angling Society, where at an early age he learnt his skills with tuition from Jim Churchouse and the late Roger Bray.
