ANYTHING young Fern can do we can do better – that was the message rapped out by Wessex Golf Centre pair Jon Bevan and Michael Watson in the only 36-hole one-day Pro-Am on the West Region circuit at North Wilts.

Days after their assistant Fern Grimshaw won her first WPGA medal of the season, her two mentors shared top spot at the course near Devizes.

They produced one under par totals of 141 to share the top spot.

Bevan led after the morning round alongside Upavon assistant Daniel Carter with a solid 70.

Bevan started with an eagle three at the first and added three birdies to turn in 32.

However, the tougher back nine took its toll on the current Marstons PGA West Region champion with four bogeys and a solitary birdie.

Watson started at the 10th and also managed four bogeys and a birdie on the same stretch of holes but recovered to pick up three shots in a 71. Bevan picked up shots at 10 and 13 in the afternoon while Watson, starting at the first, made three birdies in his first eight holes to tie the lead.

Then Bevan dropped four further shots before rallying with birdies at the fourth and fifth to assume the lead. Watson bogeyed the 13th and fatally dropped another shot at the last when a par would have brought outright victory.
