West Dorset duo fail to reach
NARROWLY MISSED OUT: Matthew Rees and Colin Wilcox
NARROWLY MISSED OUT: Matthew Rees and Colin Wilcox

BRIDPORT & West Dorset Golf Club duo Colin Willcox and Matthew Rees have narrowly missed out on a chance to play in the grand final of one of Europe's biggest amateur tournaments.

The pair beat off competition from around 1,600 other golfers to win their way through to the regional final of the illustrious Matchplay Championship but the next step proved just too far.

Had Willcox and Rees been successful in the regional final at The Vale in Wales they would have moved on to the tournament's final stage, which is due to be held at the luxurious Marriot Taba Heights Resort in Egypt.

Willcox said: "We have really enjoyed the championship and although we are disappointed to get so close to the Grand Final in Egypt, we are proud to have made the regional final."

More than 800 teams from the UK and Ireland compete in The Matchplay Championship, which costs just £20 per person to enter, and in total 16 have qualified for the all-expenses paid trip to Egypt.

John Woosey, managing director of The Golfer's Club which promotes the championship, said: "It's a shame that the pair will not be joining us at Taba Heights in April but they are due tremendous congratulations for even reaching the regional final."

Entries are already being accepted for next year's tournament.
