Champions are a big hit
STAR SHOW: Alan Minter, centre, and John Conteh, second right, with the Weymouth boxers
STAR SHOW: Alan Minter, centre, and John Conteh, second right, with the Weymouth boxers

WEYMOUTH Amateur Boxing Club's black tie dinner-boxing evening, where world champions Alan Minter and John Conteh were in attendance, proved a big hit.

The Hotel Rembrandt event hosted seven bouts, featuring six home boxers, followed by a question and answer session with Minter, former world middleweight champion, and Conteh, holder of the WBC World Light Heavyweight title for a quarter of a century.

Club chairman David Nelmes said: "It was absolutely fantastic, a great night and everyone was pleased with how it went.

"John Conteh and Alan Minter were brilliant. After dinner they went backstage and had a chat with the boxers as well as signing autographs and having their pictures taken.

"Then later, they spoke about their careers in boxing and Alan revealed that he lost his first five bouts which gives encouragement to the lads and shows them that they need to stick with it, and that you will get out what you put in.

"We gave away over £2,000 worth of raffle prizes and Steve Cook, one of the club's stalwart helpers, won a prize which was nice to see.

"It was great to have two world champions for company and we are already discussing hosting another event like this."

Colum Siddons' bout was the most talked about, with the Weymouth man highly unfortunate to lose out to Emin Coleman of Taunton.

Siddons took the first round 12-9 but lost the second 5-8. Siddons was then given a public warning before losing the final round 3-5.

Nelmes added: "We were all disappointed for Colum because we felt the referee kept warning his opponent about ducking yet never handed him a public warning."

Seaside boxer Jon Jo Look went toe-to-toe with Bristol's Jack Gough in a close contest and it was the former who took the verdict (9-5, 6-5, 6-4).

Despite a late rally Jason Osmond could not win the verdict against CJ Rogers of Waterside in a bout that could have gone either way (5-8, 4-6, 6-5).

Mo Khan was also on the wrong side of a tight contest as he lost to Jack Nash of Bristol (6-9, 4-6, 4-7).

Toby Osmond boxed Luke Smith of Taunton in a skills bout after Osmond's original opponent had pulled out the night before, so no verdict was given following the three rounds.

Sean Bailey's scheduled opponent also withdrew ahead of the night so the Weymouth member boxed an exhibition bout against Portland's Andrew McGivern.

In the final contest of the night Oakmead's Sam Hamerston beat Francis Lynn of Taunton.
