WEYMOUTH & PORTLAND 19 EAST DORSET 29

PAUL Harding’s first match back at Monmouth Avenue ended in defeat for his Weymouth & Portland side against unbeaten league leaders East Dorset.

Head coach Harding, who returned to the club last week after some 20 months away, saw the hosts take a 12-0 lead into half-time before the visitors rallied in the second period.

Steve Nation-Grainger scored two tries for Weymouth & Port-land in the first half, though the home side failed to make full use of the wind at their backs.

Their opponents did take advantage of the elements after the interval and the tries flowed.

Ryan Lewendon grabbed another try for Harding’s men but by that stage East Dorset were in command.

“We didn’t make the most of the wind in the first half and they used it really well in the second half,” said Weymouth & Portland skipper Kevin Leatham.

“They put lots of pressure on us and made the most of any loose ball, and we lost our defensive shape a bit.

“But Steve Nation-Grainger had a good game with his two tries and George Carter did a lot of work at number seven.”

Commenting on Harding’s return, he added: “Paul coming back is a major plus for us.

“He is one of the best coaches in Dorset and will be able to put his mark on the team.”

Weymouth & Portland stay fifth in the Dorset & Wilts Two South table and go to New Milton Seconds in their next fixture on Saturday.
