WYKE A lost their 100 per cent record in Division One of the Weymouth & District Table Tennis League following defeat.

Shipton Gorge A inflicted the reverse by grinding out a victory which could be highly significant in the race for the title.

Terry Whitworth top-scored for Shipton with eight points and won the opening tie before Shaun Beauchamp hit back for Wyke.

Whitworth and Gil Roberts then won the next two for Shipton but two wins for Mike Doyle and one for Steve White gave Wyke a narrow 14-12 advantage.

Two epic five-setters then left the score level at 18-18 to set up a final doubles showdown.

First, Miranda Edwardes came from two sets down to beat White and then Roberts did the same to defeat Beauchamp.

Whitworth and Roberts scored a comfortable 3-0 win over White and Doyle to wrap up the victory for the team.

Despite the defeat, Wyke still moved to the top of the table but have played a game more than Land Registry.

Elsewhere in the division, Colliton X did their chances of a top-half finish the world of good with a strong win over the high flying youngsters of Budmouth A.

Shipton Gorge B closed the gap in Division Two with a comprehensive 28-11 victory over bottom side Preston C.

Graham Albertella took his full nine points in this one for Shipton with Derek Wheeler and Brian Cammell claiming eight points apiece.

Dave Glanville gave a little resistance with wins over Wheeler and Cammell but Shipton were too strong.

Preston B and Springfield B shared the opening four matches of their tie but four straight wins for the loss of only three sets put Preston in charge.

A straight sets win for Peter Stopforth and Josh Harman in the doubles confirmed a 21-14 success.

In Division Three, the students of All Saints made the trip to Shipton Gorge and came away with a solid 27-7 victory.

Ben Hannigan and brothers Luke and Dan Dadds dropped only four sets between them in winning all nine singles matches.

John Newman and Dan Corren did restore some pride by beating Hannigan and Luke Dadds 3-0 in the closing doubles but the tie was long gone by then.

Pilgrims B claimed a close win over Wyke C.

The match was finely balanced at 15-12 in Pilgrims' favour with the final singles match and doubles remaining. Barry Thomas made the victory secure with a 3-0 win over Paul Robson-Rowell.

STEPS remain in the hunt for their first win of the season after falling to Dorset Youth B 24-11 in a competitive encounter.

Jack Hoskins and Liam Lewis both picked up wins over Mike Wood but the experience of Richard Wood and Tom Lane saw Youth B over the line.
