BRIDPORT 36 DORCHESTER II 17

ONE of their best displays of the season saw Bridport make it four wins on the trot in Dorset & Wilts Two South.

The hosts were first on the scoreboard when Daragh McLoughlin drove over from a lineout after winger Lee Burdett was forced into touch close to Dorchester’s line.

Rory Greening, in excellent kicking form all afternoon, added the conversion, before landing a penalty to make it 10-0.

Bridport were then guilty of some indifferent defending. They failed to secure the ball and allowed Dorchester to hack downfield and score.

Their kicker nailed a difficult conversion into a stiff breeze and the visitors were back in the game at 10-7.

However, good football skills the other end saw man of the match Joe Hewetson dribble the ball over the line to score as the referee played advantage for a Dorchester knock-on.

Greening was unable to add the conversion, but he used the strong wind to land two more long-range penalties before half-time, making it 21-7 to the Blues.

The second half started with another penalty as Bridport scrum-half Dave Cutting harried his opposite number into another indiscretion which proved costly.

But at 24-7 up, Bridport were perhaps a little complacent and the county town club enjoyed a good period of pressure which eventually resulted in a try and conversion.

A penalty in front of the posts gifted the visitors another three points, and at 24-17 the game was nicely set up.

From a maul, Bridport produced their best move of the game as the ball along the backs to end up in the hands of winger James Young, who finished with great pace in the corner. The conversion went wide.

There was one further score as fly-half Will Everitt sent a perfectly-weighted kick downfield to end up just short of the whitewash.

His opposite number was first to the ball but failed to control it, allowing Everitt to pick up and score.

Greening added two more points to secure a convincing 36-14 win.

This Saturday sees Bridport travel to East Dorset to take on a side that have not lost a game all season.

The Blues, sixth in the league table four points behind Puddletown, then finish their campaign at home against New Milton Seconds.
