NORTH DORSET III 0 WEYMOUTH & PORTLAND 29

WING wonder Simon Dean ran in two tries and Weymouth & Portland five in all as the Dorset & Wilts Two South leaders brushed aside North Dorset Thirds.

Brothers Ryan and Chris Lewendon also crossed for Paul Harding’s men, while George Carter put in a man-of-the-match performance at openside.

Weymouth & Portland’s lead at the top of the table remains at three points after second-placed Yeovil also bagged an extra bonus point in their 34-20 defeat of Poole.

Head coach Harding was dealt a blow before kick-off when Joe Gibson made himself unavailable.

However, after an even first 10 minutes, the visitors burst into life with Dean crossing twice.

Bryn Llewellyn converted one of the scores to make it 12-0.

North Dorset then dragged their opponents into a more forward-oriented game, but just before half-time, Ryan Lewendon touched down and Llewellyn converted.

The away side played against the elements in the second period and they had to withstand a lot of pressure from the hosts – Carter came to the fore during this period with his non-stop tackling.

An Ade Walker break then set up Chris Lewendon to go over for the all-important fourth try and Llewellyn crossed to make it 29-0.

“We were glad to get a bonus-point win,” said Harding. “I was really pleased with the second half in particular.

“I was delighted with how we played against the elements and that we nilled North Dorset.

“Simon Dean and Carl Neal on the wings were fantastic.

“Simon had two chances in the first 20 minutes and took them both.

“His finishing was just brilliant. He beat the defenders easily and brushed off the tackles superbly – he is a top-class winger.”

And on Carter’s display, Harding added: “North Dorset came out really hard after half-time and we were pretty much camped in our own half.

“But we defended superbly and George Carter’s tackle count was stupendous.”

With a break for Saturday’s World Cup final, Weymouth & Portland’s next fixture is a derby at home against Dorchester Seconds on November 7.
