ELLINGHAM & RINGWOOD II 5

WEYMOUTH & PORTLAND 34

WEYMOUTH & Portland captain Kevin Leatham insists the seaside club still have their sights set on reeling in table-toppers Yeovil, after going within seven points of the league leaders on Saturday.

The Monmouth Avenue outfit battled hard in treacherous conditions at the weekend to secure a convincing 34-5 triumph at Ellingham & Ringwood Seconds, recording their 13th win from 15 league outings in the process.

And with Yeovil, who have onlylost one league fixture this term, still to visit Weymouth & Portland next month, Leatham believes the race for the Dorset & Wilts Two South crown is far from over.

Asked whether he thought Weymouth & Portland could still catch their title rivals, the captain told Echosport: “Definitely, I think we can as long as we have guys available.

“We just have to keep going and, hopefully at our place, we will give Yeovil a good run for their money.

“They are a good side and try to play a bit, they are the benchmark we want to achieve by beating them.”

Joel Wilson was the star of the show once again for the visitors on Saturday, scoring three tries as well as battling the elements gamely during the bonus-point success.

Speaking about the contest as a whole, Leatham added: “We went up there expecting a tough game because their first team didn’t have a game.

“A couple of their first team players came on towards the end I think but we went up there in the frame of mind to play whoever they put out. A lot of the guys we have got I think are good enough to play in their first team anyway.

“There were testing conditions to say the least. I was amazed the game went ahead to be honest.”

He added: “One of the pleasing things that has happened since Christmas is we are reacting to what is going on a bit better. We can identify a threat or something that is not working for us and put it right which makes a big difference.

“Our defence was really solid on Saturday.

“Give Ringwood their dues, they came at us until literally the last minute. We had some great scrambling defence and did well on our own line against some big forwards.

“Our set-piece has been a lot better in the last couple of weeks as well which has helped us play on the front foot.”

Weymouth & Portland’s next test is a derby at rivals Dorchester Seconds on Saturday.
