DORCHESTER Under-16s stormed into the Dorset & Wilts Cup final after beating Wimborne.

Before this fixture – the all-Dorset semi-final of the competition – the county town team had never beaten their East Dorset rivals.

So this was the ideal occasion to buck this trend by running in six tries to two for a 42-12 away victory.

Wimborne seemed taken aback by Dorchester’s commitment and intensity, realising far too late that they were in a proper game against highly motivated opposition.

The visitors never allowed the hosts to recover and get back into the game, and never lost their lead after going 10-7 up midway through the first half.

What looked at half-time to be a good old-fashioned ambush turned out in the second half to be a good old-fashioned rout.

Dorchester scored four more tries, all converted under the posts, while limiting Wimborne to a single unconverted consolation try out wide.

A county town club spokesman said: “We simply had more energy and desire than the opposition, backed up by a steely resolve not to lose to them again.

“This is a team that plays for each other and by doing so becomes greater than the sum of its parts.”
