WIMBORNE II 19

DORCHESTER missed out after Wimborne won with the last kick of this Dorset & Wilts One South contest.

The hosts came from behind to lead with only five minutes to go but were rocked at the death at Coburg Road.

Playing up the slope in the first half, Dorchester were put on the back foot by Wimborne’s aggressive midfield defence, which prevented the hosts from stringing any phase of play together.

The county town side’s set scrum looked powerful but it was the visitors who took the lead, Wimborne’s classy fly-half dancing through a static defence to score under the posts.

The successful conversion was followed by two penalties and Dorchester trailed by 13 points at the break.

Dorchester were a different side in the second half and were soon back in the game.

James Baker pounced on a dropped pass on halfway, hacking on a couple of times before the ball popped up into his arms allowing him to touch down by the posts.

Baker converted his own try and Dorchester now had the momentum.

A series of scrums on the Wimborne line eventually led to wing Matt Fry finding a huge hole in Wimborne’s defence and he touched down for the hosts’ second try.

Baker’s conversion meant Dorchester led by a single point.

The home side appeared to be in control of the game now but a silly penalty allowed the visitors to retake the lead with 15 minutes remaining.

Undeterred the hosts went back on to the attack and Baker kicked them back into the lead.

With just five minutes left, it seemed that Dorchester would hold on for the victory but they conceded yet another penalty on the last play of the game and the Wimborne fly-half held his nerve to slot the winning kick.
