EAST DORSET 26

WEYMOUTH & PORTLAND 41

BROTHERS Ryan and Chris Lewendon played a big part as Weymouth & Portland recorded their 11th league win of the campaign in Dorset & Wilts One South as they claimed a bonus-point triumph at struggling East Dorset.

Skipper Ryan Lewendon, operating at fly-half for the visitors on the afternoon, opened the Seasiders’ account with a penalty, followed by winger JT Moncher who ran in a try with Lewendon slotting the conversion.

A rare missed tackle then allowed East Dorset in for a try, which was converted to put the home side on the scoreboard.

Centre Ian Dixon was next to touchdown for the visitors with Lewendon again with the conversion.

On the stroke of half-time, the Seasiders’ captain stroked over a second penalty to make the score 20-7 in Weymouth & Portland’s favour at the break.

Now playing into the wind, a run from deep allowed full-back Chris Lewendon in to cross the whitewash and touchdown for a try with brother Ryan adding the extras.

Six minutes later, the brothers repeated their efforts with Chris crossing again and his big brother converting to put Vaughan Carter’s men in control.

But the hosts then produced their best rugby of the game and scored 19 points of their own. However, Seasiders’ wing three-quarter Carl Neal grabbed a try at the death, converted by Ryan Lewendon.

Speaking after the game, first-team manager Carter said: “It was a game of two halves.

“We had the benefit of a strong wind at our backs in the first half and won that one, taking a 20 points to seven lead into the second period.

“Then after the turn around we had to face into the elements and that was just about an honourable draw.”

He added: “It was very much a team effort and we did deserve to win against a side that were much stronger than their lowly league position may suggest.”
