A GOOD crowd of around 200 people turned out to enjoy a fine afternoon of rugby and entertainment at Coburg Road, involving an exhibition match between the Surcouf XV and a Dorchester RFC select XV.

The Dorchester side, led by first XV captain James Baker, included a number of regular first and second-team players and some younger up-and-coming players from the youth section.

The Surcouf XV included a number of young guns formerly from the youth set up at Dorchester but now playing at Hartpury College, a number of former veteran players, players from the current Dorchester set-up, members of the Surcouf family and a member of the Taunton RFC first-team squad.

Club stalwart Lloyd Surcouf kicked off the game with both his son-in-law Tony Foot and two grandsons Josh and George Foot in the same side.

Dorchester ran in the first try of the game through Callum King and the Surcouf XV had a stunning five-try performance from Tom Caines who now plays his rugby at Rosslyn Park.

During the game, former Dorchester chairman and club captain Bob Andrews kept the crowd amused with commentary and musical interludes.

An open game with plenty of running, some great tries and well-contested scrums, resulted in a win for the Surcouf XV 49-37.

The score was for pride only, as the winner was Dorchester Rugby Club for running such a great family day for the community as well as rugby fans and club members.

With entertainment running on late into the evening and music from local band Vanilla Radio, everyone went home happy.

Plans are already underway for the next chapter of the event next Easter.
