BRIDPORT 22

WEYMOUTH 8

WEYMOUTH’S vice-captain Mark Sample admitted that Bridport deserved their 22-8 derby victory at Brewery Field.

Skipper Tony Worle was hoping to celebrate his wedding with victory on the same day, instead the loss ended the Seasiders’ unbeaten start to the Dorset & Wilts One South campaign, however, they still remain top of the table.

And Sample, who was stretchered off after 20 minutes, was gracious in defeat.

He said: “It was a disappointing outcome for us. Bridport took the game to us and thoroughly deserved to win but we gave the ball the away far too easily.

“Also, we were bullied in the forwards which is very rare. Having said that we can’t take anything away from Bridport.

“We started positively and the likes of Andy Wood, Sam Polley, James Ford and Will Hughes all played well but we had used all of our substitutions in the first half an hour.

“It’s not all doom and gloom though. If you’d have said at the start of the season that after five games we would have won four and lost one then I’d have been happy as I think it will be a tight league this season.”

Weymouth took the lead via a Sam Polley penalty kick but soon found themselves chasing the game after two quick tries from Jack Guilor and Dave Smith, both converted by Freddie Everett, and a penalty put the Blues firmly in the driving seat.

The Seasiders responded with a try of their own as Dave Allan put in Andy Wood for an unconverted score.

Back came Bridport though, and Guilor crossed the whitewash for the second time of the afternoon to seal victory.

Euphoric Bridport coach Paul Ninnim hailed his side’s display. He said: “It was the best performance I have seen in several years, even surpassing the way we played last season.

“We had quite a few chances that we didn’t take and the guys came off frustrated at the end, which in a way was nice to see but the most important thing was the victory and we did it in style.

“We’ve proved that we can play with the best teams in the league and beat them, and there are some games coming up that we should win so hopefully we can move on from here in the right direction.”
