WEYMOUTH 41 WIMBORNE II 10 WEYMOUTH remain just a point behind Dorset & Wilts One South leaders Dorchester after disposing of Wimborne Seconds at Monmouth Avenue.
The Seasiders had to bide their time in order to break down a spirited Wimborne side containing 13 players under the age of 20, but their patience paid off and as time ebbed away the youngsters ran out of steam.
Four tries from Weymouth’s Kiwi flanker Stuart Whyte, making his return to the starting XV following a month-long injury lay-off, was the catalyst for the hosts’ victory, with more tries coming from prop Lian Berry, left wing three-quarter Iain MacConnachie and skipper Tony Worle.
Full-back Dave Allan chipped in with a pair of conversions with replacement lock Sam Polley adding a third.
For the visitors, centre Paul Ryder crossed for their only touchdown while fly-half Henry Wareham added a conversion to an earlier penalty goal.
After the game, captain Worle said: “All credit to Wimborne they posed some problems early doors, but our experience and superior strength in the forwards drained their resolve and we took control after the break.
“Some of our support play was as good as it has been since I have been at the club, when we had a man tackled there was somebody in support to receive the ball.
“But there is still room for improvement if we want to be in with a chance of promotion at the end of the season.”
