Batsmen warned by Baker

SKIPPER Ross Baker has demanded his inconsistent batsmen “get their heads down” and start producing significant knocks on a regular basis.

Thus far only Simon Jones has registered a half-century for Beaminster and this shortage of runs has contributed to their two most recent Dorset League Division One defeats.

Often the willow wielders have done the hard work by reaching 20 only to surrender their wickets through injudicious strokes.

And Baker, who will lead out Beaminster against Broadstone Seconds at the Memorial Ground tomorrow (1.30pm), has instructed his top order to “step up”.

He said: “We’re at home on one of the best batting tracks in the league and we’ll need to post a good total or chase one down.

“On paper we have a strong top eight but they need to apply themselves and that’s what I’ll be saying to them before the match.

“They need to get their heads down and get more 50s on the board because Simon Jones is the only person to have scored a 50 in five games.”

Baker has named an unchanged line-up from that which lost to leaders Marnhull last weekend, with Adam Hillier retaining his place in the starting XI.

Broadstone visit West Dorset carrying an unenviable record of one win from six games and their mercurial nature is underlined by their batting.

On three occasions this season they have been skittled for less than 150 but, conversely, they have twice passed 250. Despite admitting he is light on bowling options, Baker revealed he has earmarked this match as one to win.

He added: “For the last two weeks we’ve played the two strongest sides and we have had heavy defeats so this is a game I’m targeting. We’re lacking a bit in terms of pace bowling and spin but I think that’s the same for most sides. This is a game we need to be up for and try to get a result.”

Beaminster: Park, Runyard, Everitt, Jones, Hurford, Baker, Hawkins, Hillier, Etherington, Legg, Herring.
