WESTBURY 7 WEYMOUTH 24

A DELIGHTED Mark Sample saw his Weymouth side breeze into the next round of the Southern Counties Cup.

The Seasiders were up against fellow Dorset & Wilts One South outfit Westbury and ran out 24-7 victors.

Chris Hurrell registered the visitors’ first try of the afternoon before a flowing move – involving Dave Allan, Tim Peplow. Craig Gelderd and Joe Gibson – was finished off by Ryan Lewendon.

Gelderd was somewhat harshly sent to the sin bin soon after and Westbury capitalised by touching down and closing the gap to three points.

But Will Hughes set up Allan for the Seasiders’ third try, which was converted by Peplow, and the away side were 17-7 ahead at the break.

Gelderd returned to the field of the play in dramatic fashion as he notched what proved to be the final score – a try successfully converted by Peplow.

There was still time for Gibson to be dismissed and Stephen Calbraith to be sin-binned, but the visitors held on for victory.

Captain Sample said: “For 60 minutes of the game I thought we played some of the best rugby we’ve played all season.

“After we scored our fourth try to make it 24-7, the game got a bit scrappy and we had Joe Gibson sent off for a trip, which wasn’t intentional, and Stephen Calbraith sin-binned.

“We spent the majority of the second half with 13 or 14 players but we kept them at bay. I think we would have put more points on the board with a full compliment of players.

“Overall I thought there some great performances right through the pack.”

* Dorchester were made to forfeit their Intermediate Cup clash with Swindon due to a crippling injury list in their front row.
