WEYMOUTH 45 WIMBORNE II 3
WEYMOUTH returned to form in fine fashion – inflicting a 45-3 defeat on Wimborne Seconds.
The Seasiders’ last win came in a 45-6 triumph over rivals Puddletown back on December 5 but they climbed up to fourth in Dorset & Wilts One South with a commanding display at Monmouth Avenue on Saturday.
Tim Peplow got the ball rolling with an early penalty before captain Mark Sample then went over from a maul to register the afternoon’s first try – which Peplow converted.
Wimborne kicked a penalty to close the gap to seven but then conceded one soon after with Peplow taking advantage once more.
James Borrington showed great strength before picking out Will Hughes who burst through the visiting defence to score another converted try.
Peplow then displayed his handling skills as he ran three quarters of the pitch, gliding past several attempted tackles, and off-loaded to Ed Kirk who scored in the corner.
Sample set up Gareth Iles for try number four, and with Peplow adding the extras the score read 32-3 in Weymouth’s favour going into the break.
The Seasiders lost both Craig Gelderd and Adam Hoxey to injury but their absence failed to disrupt the home side’s charge.
Peplow bagged a third penalty of the game, Ryan Lewendon touched down while George Carter got in on the act with Weymouth’s sixth try of the afternoon.
Sample was understandably delighted with the outcome. He said: “We dominated the first half and started really brightly, and our pressure told. The second half was a bit scrappier and Wimborne came back into the game a bit more.
“One massive plus was Patrick Merritt who made his debut at tighthead prop and had an outstanding game. In fact, that was the best I’ve seen the front row play this season.
“Overall it was an enjoyable day at the office. The most important thing now is building some consistency.”
