SALISBURY II 12 WEYMOUTH 39
WEYMOUTH captain Mark Sample was delighted with his side’s second successive win but admitted they were made to work hard for their victory by a dogged Salisbury outfit.
The Seasiders were 7-6 behind at one stage against their rock-bottom hosts, but three consecutive tries put them in the driving seat before a late double rounded off a successful afternoon for the visiting side.
Sample, who gave special praise to loose-head prop Tim Comben, said: “Salisbury may be bottom of Dorset & Wilts One South but they threw everything at us to start with, and it made you wonder why they are in the position they’re in.
“They put us under pressure but we grew in confidence after our first try and overall it was a good performance.
“The day belongs to Tim Comben who gave his best performance in a Weymouth shirt. He has set the bar now so needs to produce performances like that week in, week out.”
After withstanding early pressure, Weymouth took the lead courtesy of two Tim Peplow penalties.
Salisbury pushed forward again and edged ahead with a converted try. However, a breakaway, led by Adam Hoxey, saw Ed Kirk cross the whitewash and Peplow kick the conversion.
Gareth Iles scored try number two, with Peplow adding the extras once more, but the visitors suffered a blow prior to half-time when Kirk limped off with an ankle injury.
However, former skipper Tony Worle filled the void and Weymouth’s defence stood firm.
Having weathered the storm, the Seasiders extended their lead when Will Hughes powered through and Peplow converted for the third time of the afternoon.
Salisbury hit back with a score of their own before James Borrington and Sample completed the victory with a try apiece – one of which was converted by Peplow to take his personal tally to 14 points.
