WEYMOUTH 20 WARMINSTER 0

WEYMOUTH captain Mark Sample paid tribute to his side’s defensive qualities as they kept Warminster at bay in a 20-0 victory.

The win at Monmouth Avenue completed a quick-fire double against the Wiltshire outfit, following the Seasiders’ 52-14 success just seven days previous, and lifted Weymouth into second spot in Dorset & Wilts One South.

Delighted with the result, Sample said: “Before the game I looked around the team and saw the likes of Rich Polley, Sam Polley, Ian Tibble, Lian Berry and Gordon Tye and, with a few guys out injured or away on holiday, it was almost like the first team of a couple of years ago.

“But I thought everyone did very well and it was a good all-round defensive display. To be honest the thing I’m most pleased about is the clean sheet.

“Ryan Lewendon was close to being man of the match at Warminster the previous week but on Saturday he was certainly the man of the match this time – he was outstanding.

“We were quick out of the blocks and scored all our points in the first half. The second half was a bit scrappier and when we tired they did get some opportunities, but our defence stood strong.

“As I predicted, Warminster were completely different to when we played them at their place. But we took our chances when they came to us, and even had two tries disallowed, and I’m really proud of the lads.”

Weymouth got off to the perfect start at Monmouth Avenue, forging ahead inside five minutes when Rich Polley crossed for an unconverted try.

Warminster remained under pressure and soon conceded a penalty, which Tim Peplow dispatched to make it 8-0.

Will Quick then utilised his searing pace to score try number two for the hosts – another score that went unconverted.

And with the half-time whistle yet to sound, Weymouth all-but sealed victory when Steven Calbraith dinked the ball over the visiting full-back before touching down under the posts. Peplow added the extras to complete the afternoon’s scoring.
