Seasiders’ blitz sees off Westbury
CAPTAIN MARVEL: Tony Worle leads a Weymouth surge
CAPTAIN MARVEL: Tony Worle leads a Weymouth surge

Dorset & Wilts One South

WEYMOUTH 20 WESTBURY 5

WEYMOUTH maintained their push for third spot, and possible promotion, with victory over Westbury in Dorset & Wilts One South.

Barry Ross-Mackenzie's young charges were leading 20-0 at the half-time break and appeared to be cruising to an easy victory but the second half degenerated into a scrappy affair with the players' frustrations building up.

The Dorset & Wilts county president Ron Jones was present at Monmouth Avenue and in the first period Weymouth did their best to entertain him, taking an early lead through winger Ryan Lewenden who celebrated his 18th birthday with a penalty goal.

Minutes later, a break by Ian MacConnachie took him to within a few metres of the visitors' line before he was stopped in his tracks, however, he managed to slip the ball to skipper Tony Worle who powered over for a converted try.

More home pressure led to the Seasiders winning possession at a scrum just short of the Westbury line. Worle had a go at powering over only to be held up short, but he managed to work the ball to Paul Harding who crashed over for a try.

With half-time beckoning Tim Peplow set up Will Hughes who grabbed the limelight to touch-down and give the hosts a 20-point lead at the interval.

Weymouth squandered another opportunity early in the second half when they spilled the ball over the Westbury line.

Turning over possession on half way the Seasiders could do nothing to prevent Matt Inseal from sprinting 50 metres to ground the ball for a consolation try.

For the remainder of the game both packs came to blows with warnings being issued by the referee, and the contest as a whole gradually petered out.

Worle said: "We played well in the first half but not so well in the second. The players finished the game feeling low key because of how it ended.

"When you don't play to your full potential and still win you know you've got the makings of a solid side."
