Burton’s men face fight for their lives
RETURNS AFTER A LONG LAY-OFF: Dafydd Wright
RETURNS AFTER A LONG LAY-OFF: Dafydd Wright

DORCHESTER face the fight of their lives to hang on to their Southern Counties South status, starting with a home game against high-flying Wootton Bassett tomorrow (3pm).

The county town side sit rock bottom, just two points behind fourth from bottom Sherborne, but their three remaining fixtures are against sides in the top four.

Coach Chris Burton is quietly confident of casing an upset against a Bassett side gripped in a title race with leaders Trowbridge and third-placed Frome.

He said: "We've had a nice break and there has been a positive atmosphere in training this week. There is less pressure on us because no one expects us to win, however, we managed to draw with Trowbridge so anything's possible.

"If we can get a win then it will change the picture down at the bottom completely."

Dafydd Wright returns following a long lay-off with a broken leg but Jack Elliott is unavailable for tomorrow's clash at Coburg Road.

Weymouth's battle for third spot, and potential promotion, continues against North Dorset II at Monmouth Avenue tomorrow (2.30pm).

And captain Tony Worle is keen to avenge the 17-15 defeat on the opening day of the season. He said: "We really want to win this one because we stupidly lost to them earlier in the season, we also need to keep the pressure on Bridport so we don't want to spoil an exciting end to the season."

Worle is expected to name a virtually unchanged side from the one that lost in the Lanehouse Trophy against Bridport a fortnight ago with the only possible change seeing Richard Barclay replacing James Borrington who is struggling with a rib injury.

Puddletown travel to Wimborne II hoping to catch sixth-placed Westbury before the season ends.

The Villagers are six points behind Westbury with three games to go, so victory tomorrow is imperative.

Meanwhile Bridport visit basement-club Blandford.

Swanage & Wareham host Reading Abbey tomorrow in South West Two East knowing they can't afford any slip- ups at Bestwall.

The Swans lie third in the table, level on points with Salisbury but three points behind leaders Chippenham, who they visit on April 19, with three matches of the season left to play.

n Bournemouth and Swanage and Wareham's eagerly awaited Dorset and Wilts Cup final will take place at Dorchester on Sunday, April 6.
