FORMER Weymouth star Ben Hughes has notched his 25th cap for the British Army - thought to be the first person to do so in more than a century.
Hughes has played approximately 80 times for the Army but caps are only awarded for inter-service games. And the Newbury RFC man is hoping to claim his 26th tomorrow at Twickenham in the annual Army v Navy encounter.
Hughes, a corporal in the Royal Engineers, is one of only two current serving Army players who represent the Combined Services at both rugby union and rugby league
The father of three is also skipper of the Royal Engineers XV who under his leadership this season again retained the Army championship.
Hughes said: "Winning my record cap has been a tremendous personal moment and I want to dedicate it to my dad who has helped and supported me over the past years. However, the thrill of playing at Twickenham against the Navy has to be, for most players, the monumental event.
"I've been very fortunate with my rugby and played with many quality individuals in top class venues around the world and I certainly have no regrets about joining the Royal Engineers almost 14 years ago."
