Bridport’s Southern Counties hopes dashed

STAYING PUT: Bridport will be playing Dorset & Wilts Division One rugby next season

BRIDPORT'S hopes of playing Southern Counties rugby have been quashed with the publication of the new season's fixture list.

The protracted saga had left the Brewery Ground club in limbo since a high-ranking Dorset and Wiltshire League representative informed them that they could replace Sherborne, who wished to play at a lower standard, in the higher tier of the league pyramid.

However, nothing was formally agreed and although yet to receive an official response from a letter they sent seeking clarification, the announcement of 2008/09's fixtures indicates that their quest has failed.

Bridport are scheduled to play at Dorchester, who ironically were relegated from Southern Counties South last season, in the inaugural Dorset & Wilts One South fixture on September 13.

Club president David Williams played down the confusion instead choosing to focus on the side's upcoming campaign, where he believes they are favourites for the title.

He said: "We didn't hear any more regarding the letter we sent to them a while ago but we will be playing in the same league as last year.

"There's no big deal being made about it now, we were never pushing for it, we were asked if we wanted to go up and we had a committee meeting and the verdict was yes.

"We can now get on with the aim of winning the league this year and achieving promotion that way.

"We've got a great squad with a couple of players from the seconds coming up, and the coaching team in place is excellent too.

"I'm very confident of success, it's a young team but we'll do it."
