WEYMOUTH Wildcats could be back up and running again in less than two years if an ambitious group of fans have their way.

The Wildcats last raced at their Radipole Lane headquarters some five years ago before they were shut down.

But interest in the club has never gone away and there are plans to reintroduce speedway to the area by the time the 2017 season comes around.

James Tresadern is one of a party of four Wildcats' supporters eager to get the club going again – and he feels doing that in the next 18 months is not impossible.

However, Tesadern and his cohorts, which includes former Wildcats rider Jamie Dixon, have a lot of work to do if they want to make their plans become a reality.

Not only do they need to find a plot of land to build a track and get the planning permission that comes with it, the quarter also have to find funding for it all.

“We felt it was time to do something and there is more than enough interest in Weymouth,” said Tresadern. “So many people have sent us good luck messages and that’s what drives us on.

“We are not millionaires or very rich people, what we want to do is involve the community, and a lot have offered to help.

“A lot of hard work is involved in it but it’s something we don’t feel is unachievable. We’ve had a lot of knock-backs already but we’ll keeping going forward.

“If we can find a patch of land before Christmas or just after the new year then we can look at progressing.”

Going into more detail about the land issue, he added: “The original plan was to use the old track next to the football club.

“We know there is planning permission to build houses there, we were thinking of putting a temporary track down until we could find somewhere else.

“But we’ve gone public with it now because we are struggling to find somewhere.

“We’ve sent letters and emails to various people but they’ve either gone unanswered or people just aren’t interested.

“We ideally want to buy some land, get a track down and start off in the National League in 2017.

“A lot of planning has gone on behind it all but for us to move forward now we need that patch of land.

“We need to get a business plan together and submit it to the governing body, but we need a track before we can do that.”

A fixture with Exeter Falcons in Somerset has been arranged for some time next year, with Dixon looking at possible riders to represent the Wildcats.
