WEYMOUTH Wildcats endured a mixed result to their Southern Development League double header of racing, suffering an abandonment at Plymouth and a heavy 28-6 defeat at Reading.

Level at 6-6 going into the third heat, the meeting at Plymouth was abandoned due to time restrictions arising from track repairs.

With both teams fielding under-manned rosters, Wildcats co-promoter Martin Peters said the cancellation was “a good thing”.

He told Echosport: “It was called off after two heats because of a time restriction as they had problems with the track. The riders and everyone knew it was going to get stopped, it was one of those things.

“It was a good things because Plymouth were down to two riders and we were down to three, but it will be re-arranged. You have to have four heats to get a result.”

Wildcats’ trio of riders included Alex Spooner, Connor Locke and James Jessop for the clash against the Demons, Jessop making his debut.

“The first heat was 4-2 and then it was 4-2 to Plymouth in the second. The lads did all right. Obviously for James it was his first meeting at that kind of level.

“He did alright until he fell off but he got up and gave it his best. It’s all about the development,” Peters said.

Over at Eastbourne, where Reading are based, Peters conceded that the Racers were a “very strong side” as they overpowered Kenny Bowdery, Luke Whitehead, Jamie Sealey and James Chattin.

“Reading had a very strong side. I think they had the experience on that track and it showed through. Dan Gilkes rode well for them and we knew he would, but our guys rode really well.

“Kenny was excluded in the first race and Dan (Gilkes) fell off. The referee excluded them both. The next race two riders fell off on a tricky corner, so we had a 5-0 in that heat.

“The lads still put in 100 per cent effort. It’s all about developing the riders. Some of them have to learn how to ride the bike.

“It took James a few races to get used to the track. We couldn’t catch them but they all got laps on the track, it’s all progress for them.”

Next up for the Wildcats is an away clash at Plymouth on Friday.
