WEYMOUTH Wildcats are on track to bring speedway back to the area in 2019 after a joint venture has been agreed in principle.

Exact details of the location or the parties involved have not been released, but this development is certain to whet the appetite of motorsport fans.

Since September 2015, when co-owners Martin Peters and James Tresadern decided that they would try to resurrect Weymouth speedway, they have been working hard to bring the popular sport back to the town.

At first, they looked at re-using the former track at the Wessex Stadium, next to the football club in Radipole Lane.

Although it was in a bad state, they managed to agree a deal to reuse the track.

Unfortunately that offer was withdrawn within 24 hours.

This left the duo gutted and disappointed, but undeterred.

In 2016, the nomadic Wildcats returned to action with second-half meetings, and a full National League team challenge meeting on the Isle of Wight.

With a new Southern Development League being put together, the pair had plenty to do during the close season.

Again with a full National League meeting and the SDL, where the Cats raced at Plymouth's St Boniface Arena, the 2017 season was a very frustrating time.

However, the duo and the backroom team did not stop looking for land to put a track.

The Wildcats' final meeting at the Wessex Stadium, before the stadium was repossessed, was in October 2010 when Gary Cottham won an individual event.

The last National League meeting was a 60-34 defeat to Newport.
A delighted Peters said: "I’m extremely happy to bring back speedway back to the area.

"And after a few knock-backs we could well be on the road to bringing back this fabulous sport to the area.

Tresadern added: "After two years of hard work, we can finally say that this news was just what we needed to hear.

"So many brick walls have been put up in front of us, but we have kept on going, never given up hope.

"Now the next step starts. There is a way to go yet, but we’re looking forward to a positive future for Weymouth Wildcats."
