Work may end Jon’s Cat career

WEYMOUTH Wildcats’ asset Jon Armstrong could be forced to make his racing comeback elsewhere, as his work commitments may prevent him returning to the Wessex Stadium in 2010.

The 35-year-old is almost certain to be riding again next year after finally overcoming the broken leg he suffered in the Conference League Best Pairs at Weymouth on May 31, 2008.

Promoter Phil Bartlett was known to be keen on bringing Armstrong back as his captain and number one for next season, provided he could prove his fitness.

But the veteran racer may have to look away from Dorset for a National League berth after taking on a delivery job with a printing firm in his native Manchester.

This will probably require him to deliver work to London on Tues-days and Fridays – Weymouth’s weekly race night.

Armstrong said: “I don’t know yet but it looks like I might have a problem with Friday nights.

“If it were Tuesdays and Thurs-days, it wouldn’t be so bad. But they deliver a lot of stuff that people want on Fridays.

“We’re still not 100 per cent certain what will happen with that but it looks like it will be Tuesdays and Fridays.”

Those work commitments would rule Armstrong out of joining Plymouth and the Isle of Wight.

Meanwhile, Mildenhall, Bournemouth and Newport have already signed their top stars for next term.

This could mean the former Buxton man’s options are limited, but the Mighty Midget admits he still has to ensure he is fit to ride a bike before signing a contract anywhere.

He said: “If anyone rings me, they’ll just get told what I’ve said to Phil. Until I ride a bike, I can’t say I’m doing anything yet.

“The first hurdle I’ve got to get past is getting back on a bike and making sure I’m fit and ready to go.

“I don’t see a problem, though, so watch this space – I’m almost 100 per cent certain I will be back.”

Armstrong had a knee operation in August to relieve the pain caused by cartilage and ligament damage.

The rider is hopeful this was a success but Armstrong’s attempts to test the leg last Sunday were dashed when he suffered a twinge in his back on the Saturday night.

He said: “I was loading the bikes into the van and pulled a muscle.

“I could still feel a little bit of pain there earlier this week but I could get on a bike now and it wouldn’t bother me.

“I couldn’t believe it when I had this latest setback, but I’ll get out there this weekend – nothing is going to stop me.”

Its common knowledge that jon wont be at weymouth Cradley are the favourites this is old news Echo ,More to the point who is going to sign for the wildcats terry day and cockle havnt signed yet even so theres no news at all of other riders and i mean competitive riders not no hopers coming to the Wessex Raceway we are all wondering why this is so when other teams like Plymouth Mildenhall and our Rivals the Buccs have virtually got there teams sorted Phil could do worse than to have a chat with Kyle Newman after the disgracefull way he was led up the garden by the buccaneers and then dumped he will certainly be out to prove a point to them on the track . in any event we need to make some usefull signings and fast .

Kyle Newman has SIGNED for Newport. Weymouth will end up with crap this season and the fans will drift away, Bartlett will moan that the fans don't want speedway and that'll be then end. Don't forget he only has two years max planning permission. Now if it was a female sport we'd have the best team in the country by now.I bet in her soon the headlines will be

'Wildcats sign Speedway Ace for Comming Season' Dorset based Alex Mcleod is delighted to put pen to paper blah blah blah................

Sorry stoneman Newman hasnt signed for anyone yet how can he hes in OZ .when he left our shores he beleived he was a bucc as the Gutless wonders beavis May & butthead Vatcher didnt have the balls to tell him theyd dumped him the newport rumours are coming from this end and supposedly premier league . I agree with you theres something going on with our club i wouldnt be surprised at all if Bartlett walks away i think the rumours of last seasons major sponsors three of them who have pulled out citing dissapointment of the running of the club carry a bit more weight than newman going to newport , i just hope were going to have a competitive team which doesnt look to good at the moment as no one has been signed as yet .

According to Kyles dad he has signed for Newport and it has been released on their web-site and in the speedway star I believe. He wanted £130K for it last year as I and one major sponsor looked into buying it but we thiught it and was advised it was way way to much. I have since heard that he has reduced the amunt greatly, But hey who knows. It looks like I won't be watching any speedway next season now
