MARK ‘Buzz’ Burrows has spoken of his love for the Weymouth Wildcats but admits the chances of featuring for the club next season are “highly unlikely”.
Burrows joined the Cats last May as a replacement for the injured Jon Armstrong. However, the experienced rider suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung four months later, thus missing out on the business end of the season.
His absence dented the Wildcats’ National League title hopes and Burrows was sad to see the club end the campaign without a major trophy.
The Cats’ race for glory next term will involve Terry Day and James Cockle, who have both committed themselves for another season at the Radipole Lane outfit, as well as new signings Byron Bekker and Tom Brown.
However, Burrows is not expecting to don a Weymouth race jacket in 2010. He said: “I’m just going to try and get myself fit as I haven’t done anything since September. I’d love to come back to Weymouth but I think it’s highly unlikely due to off-the-track issues.
“I love the club and I love the people down in Weymouth, it’s a shame the season ended the way it did.
“I’m not pushing to go elsewhere but if an offer came up I’d take a good look at it. However, most teams appear to be full now. I still feel I can do a job for someone though.”
Asked about his recovery from injury, Burrows added: “I’m just about fully recovered. I’m still off work at the moment, hoping to return next week, and I’m going back to the hospital on January 20 for hopefully the final time.
“It’s taken quite a while to get over it but it’s been more to do with the infection on my chest than the break itself.”
Meanwhile, Burrows’ final act as a Wildcat saw him collect the Doonans sponsored Rider of the Year award, which was presented by the club’s former main sponsor Harold Doonan.
The recipient said: “It’s certainly an honour and it’s great to think I was appreciated at Weymouth.
“Harold’s been involved in speedway for a long time so it’s a shame he’s not involved with the club anymore.”
