Cats denied by Mighty Midget

WEYMOUTH WILDCATS 44 BOURNEMOUTH BUCCANEERS 46

BOURNEMOUTH guest Jon Armstrong returned to haunt the Weymouth Wildcats after winning a thrilling battle with Byron Bekker in heat 15 to hand the Buccaneers a dramatic 46-44 victory.

Former club asset Armstrong was linked with a return to the Wildcats earlier this year as they searched for a replacement for broken ankle victim Tom Brown.

But he refused to walk out on Dudley, where he was covering for the injured Ben Taylor, as he was unable to race on Fridays due to his work commitments.

This resulted in him agreeing a transfer to Newport, who allowed him to stay on loan with the Heathens.

There is no doubt Weymouth missed him last night, as he led the Buccaneers’ scorechart and won a titanic tussle with Bekker to seal three vital points for Bournemouth.

But Armstrong enjoyed his return to Radipole Lane, and was pleased to lead his adopted side to victory.

He said: “They brought me in to do a job and I felt like I did my job. I had an engine failure in heat one. Other than that, it went reasonably well.

“After clinching the meeting like that at the end, hopefully it will get me the chance to do more guest bookings if they need anyone.”

Asked whether he took satisfaction in denying Wildcats their second National League win of 2010, he said: “Maybe a little bit. But it’s a place I enjoy riding. I enjoy racing here. It’s just a shame that what happened, happened. But who knows what will happen in the future.”

On a night where 11 races finished 3-3, there were never more than four points between the sides.

But Buccaneers held a slender advantage from heat five onwards, after Armstrong and Daniel Halsey broke the deadlock for the visitors with a 5-1 over Tom Brown and Gary Cottham.

Despite being bottom of the National League table with just four points to their name, Phil Bartlett’s Weyline Wildcats simply refused to give in.

And it all came down a tense last-heat decider with Bekker and James Cockle on the Weymouth side facing off against Armstrong and Mark Baseby for the Buccaneers.

It looked like the Wildcats were going to bag a famous win over their Dorset neighbours, when Cockle cut across Armstrong on turn one and Bekker picked up speed out wide.

Cockle hit a rut, though, and this allowed Mighty Midget Armstrong to burst through on his inside.

Bekker took up the chase around the boards and it was clear neither man would let up. But the South African was gently eased wide by his Mancunian rival and Armstrong motored over the line to a match-winning triumph. He was given the bumps at the pit gate by a grateful Bournemouth team.

While some guests have a habit of taking things easy when representing another side, Armstrong had no qualms about standing his ground against Boksburg-born bullet Bekker.

He said: “It’s racing – you can’t afford to back off. Points make prizes and they’re your wages, aren’t they? If you back off, you may as well give the guy some money.”

How long can this go on for !!!
The wildcats lose again we were told that the team would improve over the season and be in the play off,s by the end of the season !!!
It keeps be said how much hard luck the wildcats are having but we have been lucky to score the points we have Last night Bournemouth should have won a lot more than they did
Jon Armstrong drove half way down England just to put one over Weymouth Speedway because our promoter upset yet another person
The track was rubbish as well !!!

Your obviously agreived royals and i agree with a couple of your qoutes yes the track preparation is bad ,I dont agree that bmth should have won by a bigger score Why ?? if they hadnt have had Jon armstrong who rode out of his skin we would have won that there was never more than four points gap in the whole meeting i fail to see where your coming from . Jon armstrong hasnt done himself any favours with the fans by his qoutes of he got pleasure in beating us we supported him in terms of a good collection etc when he got injured and to come out with that doesnt go down to well also i recall didnt he say he couldnt ride on a friday for us because of work commitments .!!! Hope your back soon TERRY !!

So who is right here then you two or the Management, who told the OHEC that the track had been re-laid and was perfect I can't really comment as I refuse to go to speedway whilst 'Ginge' is running it. I also agree that Armstrong did say when wanted back at Weymouth to cover injuries that he had to work Fridays. I thin that's a load of B*****ks as apparently he purchased his contract from Bartlett and promptly joined Newport, who guess what ? ride on a Friday night. So as well as Bartlett Armstrong has no integrity and is not to believed. We keep hearing who 'Ginge' has upset, IMHO he upset the two most important people involved with Weymouth Speedway last season Messers Doonan & Charlton the main sponsors,Hell Nigel now sponsor's 3 of their riders and I do believe the whole set-up and drives to watch them every week, thats how dedicted the man is. Brian White was bad but this chap really takes the biscuit. I hope that someone wants to buy the promotion rights soon and then the club can be run on a serious basis and not by someone whose ego is bigger than brain

Stoneman your a bit behind mate .Firstly if that track is described as perfect Id sooner we put the boards on a ploughed field and let the boys go on that every rider including the Midget for want of an unprintable word was wobbling on the straights and the turns cockle had the Midge on turn one coming out of it he hit a rut and midge got inside of him and thats how we lost it in heat 15 .Theres all different stories going around about who owns who and who owes who !!!dont know what to think for my part i want to see speedway at Weymouth and Hopefully long may it continue there are other rumours going around stoneman that cant be said on here and im not so sure as you would like them so come on down and watch the boys dont worry what the managers up to for the moment !!!

Sorry Magura mate but I vowed last season after being belittled in front of both riders and staff for something that the Promotion did the following week I would not set foot in th e Stadium (sic) while 'Ginge 'was still there. In fact I have lost all interest in speedway at this moment in time

Entertaining meeting on the whole although got to agree the track was not the best I have seen is there someone else doing the track now as its usual pretty good? Didnt the former team manager do the track too or has he been releived of all duties? Was great to see Armstrong again as I enjoy his all action style bit of a shame its not for us anymore though. From the comments on here and along the back straight I assume there is more than meets the eye regarding his not riding for weymouth this season which is a shame. II know you should nt beleive all you read on here but there seems to be alot of off track activities affecting this seasons performances and rider choices. The atmosphere around the place does seemed to have hit an all time low and is along way from the happier days of 2008. The crowds seem to be diminishing and although I dont know the expenses involved in running a track money must be getting a bit tight and theres not too many sponsors about. I see we have another Saturday night fixture next week which is up against the World Cup is the club told when to have their fixtures as there seems to havebeen a fair few that have clashed with GP's this year and we seem to get the short straw?

The club is not told when to run fixtures. But Plymouth being the more senior track than Weymouth take priority in two-way fixtures. It's the luck of the draw so to speak and with 'Ginge' swapping race nights left ,right and Chelsea it'll remain that way

I thought it was a very good meeting. The result was a shame.

As for the Mighty Midget, he was employed, for the night, by Bournemouth to do a job. He did a good job and deserves nothing but praise for helping to make an exciting meeting.

As for the track, it was a disgrace! Re-laid by the former manager Dicken in the week, according to a couple of the regular fans around me.

As for the manager, chairman, promoter, what ever you want to call it, they are still, against the odds running speedway races in Weymouth for us to enjoy. Win or no win.

"Wind your neck in" is what I keep getting told. "UTD fans still turn out to support the team even though they dislike the Glaziers."

Support the team, the sport and most of all the riders. All this talk of "Feel good factors" WHO CARES???

Riders ride and get paid. FULL STOP!

Chairman puts it on for us to enjoy and lines his pockets, all going well. When it doesn't he empties them, as he has done the last couple of years to keep it going.

Before you burn "Ginge" at the stake, ask yourself, who else would or could do it?

"Ginge" loves his speedway and really KNOWS his speedway. Crap people skills, he's the first to admit, but what's your boss at work like? Riders might not want to go out for a beer with him but so what! They are there to do a job. A JOB! Just like J Armstrong did for the visitors, costing us win number 2 and a, no doubt, drain of any confidence some of the riders may have had. (Tom Brown)

NO1 Armstrong said he couldnt ride for us on a friday because of work commitments ,and he turns up riding for the Buccs.No2 He said he got satisfaction in beating us .And thats after the way we all rallied round and had a very good collection for him when he was injured .So if you are a Wildcat why are you praising him up ?yes he rode out of his skin for what is now obvious reasons but that didnt make it a one man show its easy to say now but if that track had been properly prepared James Cockle wouldnt have hit a rut on turn 1 in heat 15 and lifted then it would have been very difficult for the midget to pass him and Boris and we could have well won it but its done now lets hope the Manager can sort the track out or get someone in who knows what there doing before The Devils turn up next Saturday.

In response to the comments of the supposed Wildcats fan Im Not Gay (oh really) Jem Dicken Did Not re lay the track at all It was the present tractor driver assisted by the up and coming rider (tongue in cheek)Scott Day !!!.Jem Dicken would have made a better job than those two with his eyes shut after a night out down town if the manager doesnt want the riders complaining about the track preparation then get someone in who knows what there doing and doesnt just talk a good story .PLEASE NOTE WILDCATS FANS SCOTT DAY is in no way related to the fans favourite TERRY DAY .!!!!!

Thanks Magura, yes the Echo do seem to have lost interest there used to some very good coverage last season but I guess speedway will always be the poorer relation to footy.
