HAROLD Doonan insists his consortium must “fight dirty” in their bid to save the Wildcats from extinction.

The former main sponsor of the Radipole Lane outfit has been unsuccessful in his attempts to arrange a new lease for the Wessex Raceway track, citing non-communication from landowners Wessex Delivery Partnership as the major stumbling block.

And Doonan’s frustration culminated in a ‘Save Our Speedway’ rally at his yard in Lynch Lane on Saturday, where 177 supporters signed a petition to keep the sport alive.

Boosted by the weekend’s events, the builders’ merchant has a new “form of attack” in the ongoing battle to rescue the club.

Morgan Sindall Investments hold part ownership of Wessex Delivery Partnership and Doonan is keen to contact the former in the hope of gaining some form of resolution.

He said: “Having drawn a blank with Malcolm Curtis at Wessex Delivery I phoned up Morgan Sindall’s office in London and a guy I spoke to there suggested I write to the directors of Morgan Sindall and see if we can get any joy that way.

“We are going to miss this season but we have to go above Mr Curtis and try to fight dirty.

“We have the money to pay up front. I’ve checked with the council (West Dorset District Council) and the land is only for sporting use, so there can’t be any other plans afoot.

“Hopefully someone above Mr Curtis will realise that they do not need any bad press in Weymouth.

“We just want a yes or no answer.”

Curtis did not wish to comment when contacted by Echosport.

Meanwhile, Wildcats’ fan Malcolm Tubb has written a poem dedicated to saving the club.

SAVE OUR SPEEDWAY

Please keep speedway at Weymouth and hear out our plea,

For our passion and loyalty it always shall be.

2008 champions Weymouth’s golden filled year,

Our feelings united with such warmth and good cheer.

All riders and staff, mechanics and fans,

Their dreams had been answered, the future had plans.

Our brave modern day Lionhearts bring our spirits alive,

They make us feel proud for the glory they strive.

We ask very little, please give us this chance,

For a positive future that can only enhance.

Weymouth Speedway will thank you to make a fresh start,

So I hope these few words will stay close to your ‘heart’.
