THE Wildcats are back on track tonight at the home of their biggest rivals – the Plymouth Devils (7.30pm).

A Weymouth representative side will take part in a four-team tournament in memory of the late Tony Sanford, who was tragically killed at the old Exeter track 30 years ago.

Lining up once again for the Wildcats are Newport Hornets duo Jay Herne and Richard Andrews, Belle Vue Colts’ Karl Mason and Brendan Johnson, who has regained fitness after undergoing overnight treatment to a back injury at Newport’s Royal Gwent Hospital last weekend.

Fellow defunct clubs Exeter and Trelawny are also in action, while the hosts complete the line-up.

Event organiser and ex-Wildcat Matt Bates said: “I’m racing for my hometown team (Exeter), at my old club, against my other old clubs.

“I obviously rode for the Wildcats after attending many training schools and riding second halves with George Piper in my early days before eventually riding as a Wildcat.

“Even though I never managed to complete a season at Weymouth it’s still very close to my heart as well.

“Taking away Weymouth Speedway is a huge part of my life gone, just like Exeter. I was at the first ever meeting at Weymouth when speedway came back in 2003 and also at the last, so I guess it will be quite emotional on the night.”

Former announcer at the Wessex Raceway, Tim Allan, will manage the Cats this evening.

He said: “I have never managed a team before but Matt wanted someone linked to Weymouth so he asked me. I thought it would be good fun, so why not? I will help in any way I can and I’m looking forward to it.

“Even if you look at the other teams there are guys with Weymouth connections, such as Matt Bates, James White-Williams and Tom Brown.”
