Ruthless Ryan upsets odds

TITLE WINNER: Ryan McKechnie, left, winner of the Under-17s Open at Exeter with runner-up Jamie Curness from Hampshire

WEYMOUTH Squash and Fitness Centre member Ryan McKechnie upset the odds by defeating some of the country's best young talent at the Under-17s Open Tournament in Exeter.

McKechnie was an unranked outsider going into the event but he soon started making headway, winning his first round match 3-0 and his second round match 3-1.

That set up a clash with second seed James Ryan in the next stage. The Wiltshire player is currently ranked 67th in the country but that did not faze McKechnie as he sailed through with another 3-0 success.

The Weymouth teenager then repeated that feat against the number three seed in the last four, setting up a meeting with number one seed James Curness of Hampshire in the final.

Ranked 61st in the country, Curness was a clear favourite but McKechnie was walking tall after his previous wins in the tournament and he did not drop a game, capturing the title with a fourth 3-0 victory.

A spokesman said: "There were some excellent long rallies in the final but Ryan showed his control of the game and won through, which was a magnificent achievement considering football is his real passion."
