CHESHAM UNITED 2 TERRAS 1

WEYMOUTH were knocked out of the FA Trophy at Chesham despite a battling second-half performance.

Ben Joyce’s sensational strike gave the Terras hope but they were not able to break down a well-drilled United side.

Chesham are flying in the Calor League Premier Division this season and it was them that made the better start to the game thanks to a goal from Chris Dillon.

The striker found himself on the edge of the area and fired a low shot that beat Jason Matthews and found the bottom left corner.

The Generals continued to pile on the pressure in the first few minutes with both Drew Roberts and John Kyriacou firing shots over the bar.

The Terras’ first chance came in the eighth minute when Luke Burbidge’s pass found Barry McConnell, but the defender had his shot blocked.

But Chesham doubled their lead in the 14th minute when Roberts’ well-timed pass found Steve Wales in acres of space behind the Weymouth defence and the midfielder coolly slotted the ball under Matthews.

It should have been three minutes later but Roberts somehow launched his shot over from only yards out, much to the relief of the travelling Weymouth fans.

Weymouth then started to find their stride in the game with Joyce shooting straight into the arms of the keeper, followed minutes later by a strike from Stewart Yetton.

The Terras’ best chance of the half fell to Burbidge when the midfielder capitalised on a mistake by Chesham’s Laurie Stewart but his shot could only find the side netting.

The second half started as a slow burner but Joyce ignited the tie when his 20-yard screamer found the top right corner to get Weymouth back into the game with 56 minutes played.

But Chesham duly responded, Roberts somehow missing from yards again when Toby Little fed him the ball from the left wing.

Dillon should have doubled his tally for the day and sent United two clear again when he found himself one-on-one with Matt-hews but his lobbed effort went wide of the post.

In an end-to-end half, Weymouth then had the next two chances as Yetton saw his half-volley saved by Shane Gore, who then managed to keep out both Michael Walker and Yetton again thanks to some sharp reflex saves.

Little tried to respond for the hosts, beating three Weymouth players on the left wing, but his effort was deflected just wide of the far post.

The Terras could consider themselves lucky that Roberts was not on form as the striker missed another chance in the 77th minute, this time his effort was deflected past the post.

As Weymouth pressed for an equaliser in the closing stages they left themselves open at the back on a number of occasions.

First, Roberts again miscued when he shot straight at Matth-ews, while substitute Inih Effiong showed some lovely skill to turn his defender but he could not find the target.

And, as the Terras committed more and more men forward in the dying moments, Little found himself in oceans of space in the Weymouth half, but the winger’s strike was well wide.

Although Weymouth pushed for the equaliser, Chesham’s resilience proved too strong and they progressed to the next round.
