CORBY TOWN 3

WEYMOUTH 1

WEYMOUTH were unable to build on a fine start at Steel Park as Corby Town fought back to claim the points and a fifth successive Calor League Premier Division home win in a row.

It was looking good for the Terras when their bright start was rewarded thanks to Corby joint-manager Tommy Wright heading into his own net.

And there seemed to be few problems for the Terras as they remained in control of the contest pretty much up until the game changed five minutes before half-time.

Nathan Rooney equalised for the hosts and they added a second through Stuart Hendrie nine minutes into the second half before the same player rounded things off with 10 minutes to go.

Despite the lengthy trip to the Midlands, it was Weymouth who started the brighter with Corby looking a bit flat early on and that would be the theme for the remainder of the half.

The Steelmen did have the first sight of goal when Tom Berwick wriggled free and shot just over the bar but it was the Terras who broke the deadlock just before the quarter-hour.

Corby goalkeeper Paul Walker did well to turn Stewart Yetton’s shot round a post after a neat move involving Matt Groves and Ben Joyce.

But, from the resulting corner, Wright headed into his own net under pressure from Michael Walker.

Things got worse for the hosts when their skipper Paul Malone was forced off with an ankle injury.

It all resulted in Weymouth staying in control of the game. They enjoyed plenty of poss-ession, although they didn’t create any clear-cut chances to extend their advantage.

And they were hit by something of a sucker-punch five minutes before the break when the hosts found an equaliser out of nothing.

Wright teed up Rooney and the midfielder hammered home a wonderful 25-yard strike into the bottom corner with Weymouth goalkeeper Jason Matthews rooted to the spot.

That sparked Corby into life and they were unfortunate not to go in at half-time in front.

Berwick cut in from the right and hit a shot that Matthews palmed away and then, just a few moments later, Berwick went even closer when his strike across goal cannoned off a post.

The Steelmen did continue that momentum into the second half and they went in front nine minutes after the restart.

The build-up was neat and it ended with a cross being floated in from the right-wing.

Hendrie met it with an acrobatic overhead kick and the ball found its way in with the aid of a deflection.

Almost immediately, Luke Burbidge sent a ball across the Corby goal but there was no-one there to finish it off.

From there, the game became scrappy with few chances for either side.

Wright shot wide from Hen-drie’s cross for the hosts but Weymouth gradually clawed their way back into things and they went close to grabbing an equaliser when Michael Walker headed just wide from a corner.

But Corby heeded that warning and, two minutes later, killed the game off with a lovely move.

Hendrie found debutant Aman Verma in the area and his wonderful flick back to Hendrie allowed the forward to pass the ball past Matthews and into the bottom corner.

Verma had a late effort blocked after brilliant work from Berwick but another goal wasn’t needed as the Terras struggled to find a way back into it.
