HAMWORTHY REC 3 WEYMOUTH RESERVES 2

TERRAS’ boss Jake Richmond said he couldn’t fault any of his players after an “absolutely outstanding” performance in defeat at Magna Road.

Richmond admitted the three goals the visitors conceded could have been avoided, but he didn’t want that to detract from what he felt was Weymouth’s best display this season.

Despite going a goal down 11 minutes in when Sam Purdy scored, the Terras created the best of the chances in the remainder of the first half and could well have held a comfortable lead at the break if they had been able to finish their opportunities.

Jamie Beasley, Josh Tennant and Ashton Butcher all went close during the first 45 minutes.

However, the second half was only a minute old when Beasley nonchalantly found the top corner from 25 yards as everyone else seemed to be waiting for the referee’s whistle following a foul on Sammy Nichols.

But disaster struck for the Terras when the hosts scored a second through Dom Falco and then Nichols, who had come in for some rough treatment throughout, was shown a red card for retaliating to another poor challenge.

Richie Sands, the man who committed the foul, was also sent off.

The incident seemed to affect the visitors and they went 3-1 down soon after when Luke Stone scored on 67 minutes.

Having recovered from going a man down, Weymouth made it 3-2 with 13 minutes left when a move involving Sean Zima, Ashley Ayley and Gareth Will ended with substitute Luke Chatterton scoring from a tight angle.

It was all Weymouth from that point on and they went close to forcing a draw when a shot from Chatterton was deflected wide.

“Other than three goals we conceded which were a bit sloppy, there were no negatives for me,” said Richmond. “Every single one of my players deserved 10 out of 10 because they never gave up.

“They were absolutely outstanding and I couldn’t fault them.

“We dominated 65-70 per cent of the game, we made Hamworthy look ordinary, and even their manager said to me at the end he didn’t know how they had won it.

“It’s not very often you can feel so positive after a defeat but this was one of those occasions.”

Commenting on the red card, he added: “They couldn’t live with Sammy and were smashing into him all afternoon.

“He was the victim of a disgusting tackle in the second half and he got up and grabbed the guy around the throat.

“In the end he snapped and was sent off, and it’s a lesson he will have to learn.”
