WEYMOUTH RESERVES 1 HAMWORTHY REC 2

JAKE Richmond felt his players were “outstanding” in their defeat to Hamworthy Recreation at the Bob Lucas Stadium, but he was also quick to praise the new Dorset Premier League champions.

The visitors went into the game knowing a win would guarantee them the title, and goals from Max Wilcock and Dominic Falco ultimately proved enough for Keith Whatling’s men.

Hamworthy needed to show their resilience on the day as they had to play an hour of the match with 10 men following a red card for dissent.

They could have gone a goal down three minutes in when Szymon Matuszewski hit the post with a free-kick.

However, Hamworthy immediately broke downfield and Wilcock scored in his side's first attack.

Weymouth survived a couple of one-on-one situations before Matuszewski headed inches wide from a corner.

But not even a red card seemed to disrupt Hamworthy and Falco doubled their advantage early in the second period.

Josh Tennant then set up Gareth Will for his first Weymouth goal, but the visitors saw the game out to secure the championship.

“We played really well,” said Terras’ boss Richmond. “We scored an excellent team goal but conceded a couple of sloppy ones ourselves.

“They deserved to win because they managed the game really well, and perhaps we need to bring in one or two players who have that experience to manage matches.

“Fair play to Ham Rec, they are worthy winners and fully deserve the title.

“You don’t win the league by mistake and Keith has got an organised and experienced side that can come through tight games when they need to.

“I thought my lads were outstanding and they were gutted not to get something out of the game.”

On Will, he added: “Gareth got his first goal for the club and he is a brilliant little player.

“He is such a hard worker and never gives less than 100 per cent, and I rate him.”

Weymouth have one game left this season, at home to Westland Sports this Saturday, and could still finish the campaign in fourth place.
