WEYMOUTH RESERVES 1 MERLEY COBHAM SPORTS 3

TWO stoppage-time goals condemned the Terras to only their second league defeat of the campaign at the Bob Lucas Stadium on Saturday.

Jordan Collins and Luke Phillips broke the home side's hearts as they struck within a minute in the closing stages of the game.

Weymouth had taken the lead early in the second half through a controversial free-kick by Dan Peart before Collins levelled in the 52nd minute.

The latter then had a hand in both of his side's late strikes which keep Merley just two points behind Dorset Premier League leaders Balti Sports.

Both teams started the contest quietly, not allowing each other to settle.

This meant the game was a scrappy affair as the Terras and Merley could not find their rhythm.

Weymouth were the better side for much of the half but struggled to get in any shots on goal that could trouble the visitors' goalkeeper.

However, this did not mean the Merley stopper wasn't involved in the encounter.

After being put under severe pressure, the keeper spilled two crosses in two minutes, while Merley also hit their ow woodwork.

If the first half had struggled to catch fire, the second started with a bang.

Three minutes in Peart was adjudged to have been fouled on the edge of the Merley box and, while the keeper was lining up his wall, the Weymouth player was allowed to take the free-kick quickly.

He coolly placed the ball into the opposite corner to leave the keeper stranded.

But as the midfielder celebrated there were protestations from the visitors.

After a couple of minutes of confusion the goal was allowed to stand, much to the annoyance of the away side.

But they were level three minutes later.

A nice passing move found its way to Collins who hammered a half-volley into the top corner to bring the scores level.

The play turned frenetic as both teams searched for a winner.

Weymouth went close through Conor Jevon and Luke Winsper but both failed to trouble the keeper.

Weymouth manager Bradley Asagba was sent to the stands with 15 minutes left and this seemed to impact his side as they suffered two late sucker punches.

Collins struck first and, as Weymouth surged forward, Cobham substitute Phillips broke forward to seal the win.

Next weekend sees the reserve side travel to South Cheriton United.
