WIMBORNE TOWN 1 (Wilson 76)

WEYMOUTH 1 (Sills 25)

(Weymouth win 4-1 on pens)

GOALKEEPER Steve Boore stepped up to the plate to ensure Weymouth booked their place in the next round of the Red Insure Cup.

The former Chickerell United gloveman saved two out of three Wimborne spot-kicks after the sides had battled to a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes at Cuthbury.

The visitors made as many as nine changes from the side that started the 1-1 league draw at Redditch United last time out.

Boss Jason Matthews, who handed the goalkeeping gloves to number-two Boore on the night, did however give minutes from the start to the likes of Pat Baldwin, Tim Sills, Mark Molesley and Chris Shephard.

Midfielder George Rigg was forced to hobble to the sideline with an ankle problem early on and, with the Terras’ momentarily a man light, the Weymouth backline had to contend with a jinking run from Magpies’ marksman Mark Gamble, which was eventually snuffed out.

Conor Jevon then hit a speculative effort which clipped the top of the Wimborne crossbar from range but, after stroking the ball around nicely in the opening 25 minutes, the Terras drew first blood.

A pin-point ball from the right fell perfectly onto the head of Sills, who rose above his man to nod home into the corner.

In search of a leveller, Franklyn Clarke then surged forward from deep for the hosts and hit a stinging effort which was denied by Boore and Shephard bent a free-kick inches wide at the other end after he was brought down.

Weymouth’s Rigg was replaced by Dan Peart as a precaution for the visitors and Boore was called into action once more before the break.

He sprung to his right to tip Morgan Turner’s low drive out for a corner.

Gamble was then forced off for the hosts on a stretcher with what looked a serious injury and Jevon went close once again for the Terras soon after.

Wimborne’s Billy Maybury tested Boore and the Terras’ keeper was tasked with another sublime stop to beat away a fizzer from Clarke.

But on 76 minutes, the Magpies got their reward when Patrick Wilson stabbed home at the back post from a corner to make it 1-1.

With the game level after 90 minutes, spot-kicks decided the outcome.

And fittingly, the Weymouth goalkeeper excelled in the shootout to ensure the Terras progressed.
