WEYMOUTH RES 5 HAMWORTHY UTD RES 1

MARK Ford’s second-half hat-trick propelled a sluggish Weymouth side to a comfortable 5-1 win over Hamworthy United Reserves at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

Ford’s brother Paul was also on the scoresheet for the hosts after the break, as was Sanchez Jansz-Baker, while Hamworthy’s George Turner had made it 1-1 at the interval.

While the Terras recorded their seventh win of the season in the Dorset Premier League, boss Bradley Asagba was quick to admit his men were not at their best, particularly in the first half.

However, with defenders Aston Butcher, Craig Michie, Dan Pidgley and Anthony Carlile all missing, a new-look Weymouth back four took time to gel.

Jansz-Baker gave the hosts the lead on 11 minutes only for Turner to level on the half-hour mark.

Asagba made his feelings known to the players at half-time and the Terras certainly improved in the second 45 minutes.

Mark Ford bagged his first of the afternoon in the 49th minute before scoring two more by the time the game was an hour old.

And Paul Ford, on for captain Conor Jevon, rounded things off with the home side’s fifth late on.

“The result wasn’t too bad in the end but there was a real lethargy to our play in the first half,” said Asagba. “We were sloppy and lackadaisical in everything we did.

“We made it a bit more of a contest than it should have been in the first half.

“That said, we did create enough chances to go three or four goals up by half-time, but it wasn’t a display we were particularly pleased with.

“We got them in at half-time and had a discussion about what we needed to do and the second half was a lot better.

“The players took on board the instructions we gave them and they played with more tempo.

“We dictated the game and seemed to be a bit sprightlier than the first half.”

On Mark Ford’s performance, he added: “Mark hasn’t played a lot of football this season but we rewarded him with a start last week and again on Saturday.

“He needs the team to be playing well to show what he can do and so he wasn’t able to do that in the first half.

“But he took his goals well in the second half and he really showed his ability to finish.”
