WEYMOUTH RESERVES 3 HOLT UNITED 2

WEYMOUTH Reserves recorded a positive start to their 2016 fixtures, as, despite being pegged back from 2-0 up, they eventually went on to overcome Holt United at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

The win, Weymouth’s ninth league success of the season, ensured they moved within two points of fourth-placed Balti Sports in the Dorset Premier League table, with a game in hand on the side directly above them.

On Saturday, Weymouth started in the ascendancy against a Holt outfit who had not played a league fixture for more than a month.

Sanchez Jansz-Baker opened the scoring for the Terras and that was soon followed up by a goal from Oliver Clayton, as manager Bradley Asagba’s charges stamped their authority on proceedings.

A mix-up at the back then allowed Holt to get back into the contest at 2-1, with Asagba admitting his side “dropped off” for a period.

Jansz-Baker squandered an opportunity to make it 3-1 just after the break and the Terras were punished as Holt levelled things up.

But, as the hosts started to push for a winner with just under 30 minutes remaining, up popped Jansz-Baker eight minutes from time to notch his second, and what proved to be the winner.

“At the end of the day, we were looking for three points before the game and that’s what we got, so I was quite pleased,” Asagba told Echosport.

“When we play with urgency we look half useful. When we don’t we look quite average to be honest.

“We should have been out of sight before half-time, even before they scored it could have been four or five.”

Asagba also gave minutes to new recruits Edgar Zanin and Sam Jackson, who both joined up with the squad over the Christmas period.

He added: “Edgar started and Sam came on for the last 10 minutes. We have high hopes for both of them.”

Craig Michie and Dan Pidgely were both back in the Terras’ starting XI at the weekend which provides the side with a welcome boost.

Conor Jevon is likely to be back in the set-up soon, as well as Connor Cullingford.
