DUNSTABLE TOWN 1

WEYMOUTH 4

WEYMOUTH got back to winning ways and eased the pressure on player-manager Jason Matthews with a comfortable triumph at Dunstable Town.

Double strikes from both Ben Thomson and Stewart Yetton proved enough for the away side to progress to the third qualifying round of the FA Trophy.

The Terras’ boss needed his side to rally following their disappointing 1-0 loss against Merthyr last time out, and Matthews responded to that result by making four changes to his starting XI.

Out went loan duo Stuart Fleetwood and Bradley Tarbuck, who were unavailable, as well as Dan Smith and Billy Lowes, who both dropped to the bench.

Returning to the starting line-up was Jordan Copp, Charlie Davis, Chris Shephard and Thomson, the latter coming back from injury.

And it was Copp who was involved in the game’s first talking point. He went over in the box but the match official showed no interest in awarding a penalty.

The returning Shephard then fired a free-kick wide before Davis also lined one up, which was saved.

Former Dorchester man Davis then produced a tantalising ball in that just failed to reach Terras’ skipper Yetton, or midfielder Dean Evans as the away side continued to probe.

But the breakthrough eventually came on 31 minutes.

Another Davis free-kick was well saved and, after Thomson shot, Yetton was on hand to turn the ball in and break the deadlock for the Terras.

Soon after, the Terras were 2-0 up. Thomson on this occasion converted, capping off a slick move before the interval.

Following the break, Matthews’ men saw their lead halved when Dunstable’s Adam Moussi got away from his man to head home a dangerous ball in, but that was not to deter Weymouth from going on to win the tie.

After absorbing some pressure created by the hosts, and having a goal chalked off due to hand ball, Weymouth got their third.

Thomson coolly rounded home goalkeeper Jack Smith and converted to restore the away team’s two-goal cushion at 3-1.

And not to be outdone by his strike partner, it was then Yetton’s turn to find the net once again. Heading in from a corner to wrap the game up.

There was also time for Thomson to hit the post as he come within touching distance of a hat-trick, but it was not to matter, as Matthews’ men comfortably booked their place in the next round.
