PAULTON ROVERS 1

WEYMOUTH 1

(Paulton Rovers won 4-3 on penalties)

PAULTON Rovers shocked a strong Weymouth side on penalties as they dumped the Terras out of the League Challenge Cup.

After a goalless first half that favoured the visitors, the hosts took the lead in the 75th minute through Kane Simpson.

A 90th minute own goal sent the tie to penalties and Andrew Hannah saved Dan Smith’s spot-kick before Bradley Tarbuck struck the bar to send the hosts through.

Jason Matthews made a few changes from the side that beat Dunstable Town in the FA Trophy on the weekend, giving Aaron Rodriguez and Chae Brancman a run out. There were also spaces in the squad for Stuart Fleetwood and Tarbuck, who were cup tied on Saturday.

The visitors started brightly at Winterfield Road as Rodriguez – eager to impress – struck the post with a 30-yard effort.

The hosts then put the ball into the back of the net only to see the flag raised by the linesman. Weymouth shrugged this off and started to play some nice football however, they were unable to test the home stopper.

It was then Paulton’s turn to hit the post as Jake Mawford beat Matthews only to see it ricochet off the post. The game continued to be end-to-end with Dan Smith pulling the strings in midfield. He found Charlie Davis as half-time approached but, the midfielder could only fire over the bar.

There was just enough time for the hosts to strike the post again as the teams went into the break goalless.

Brancman had a couple of chances at the start of the second half but, Hannah was on hand to keep the parity. At the other end, Rovers put a free-kick over the bar.

Weymouth were in control of the second half but, it was the hosts who took the lead. Great work from substitute Kane Gould found Simpson and he slotted home.

The Terras piled on the pressure and found their leveller in the 90th minute. A cross was deflected into the net by a Rovers player to send the tie to penalties.

After six straight spot-kicks found the net, Smith’s effort was saved before Tarbuck hit the bar to see the Terras out of the competition.
