WHITEHAWK 2

West 12, Mills 81

WEYMOUTH 2

Davis 80, Shephard 87pen

LATE drama at the Enclosed Ground meant Weymouth’s FA Trophy run continued, as they earned a home replay against higher-level Whitehawk.

It seemed that Jason Matthews’ side were heading out of the competition having been under the cosh and trailing for most of the game against the Hawks, but the entire tie burst into life during the latter stages to result in a 2-2 draw.

A Mike West opener put the hosts in control before Charlie Davis levelled things up, only for Danny Mills to put Whitehawk back in the box seat a minute later at 2-1.

But after Stewart Yetton was adjudged to have been felled in the Hawks’ box, up stepped Terras' ace Chris Shephard to convert from the penalty spot to set up a replay at the Bob Lucas Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Terras made two changes from the side that drew 0-0 with King’s Lynn in the league on Tuesday with Ben Thomson coming straight back in following his one-game suspension.

He replaced Sam Jordan, who was left out of the squad completely.

Conor Jevon, who got a hat-trick in midweek for Weymouth at Sherborne Town, was again left to settle for a spot on the bench but Dan Smith was recalled on the wing in place of Jordan Copp, who was not in the squad due to an ankle injury.

While the Terras’ goalkeeping resources have been stretched since the last round against Poole Town, National League South Whitehawk had their own issues with finding a gloveman for this encounter.

The Hawks re-signed goalkeeper Adri Munoz on a non-contract basis as cover, and he came straight into the starting XI.

Marvin Hamilton was also left out of the squad as his partner went into labour prior to the encounter. The hosts only named four substitutes, including acting joint-boss Ben Strevens, on the bench.

That did not stop the home side having the better of the opening 10 minutes however, as the Terras had to absorb some pressure from the outset.

Jake Wannell charged a shot down very early in the play before, on nine minutes, he was at it again to deny Mike West, who powered an effort at goal.

But it was West who had the last laugh when he showed great technique to hit a curling strike which flew into the top corner three minutes later to give the Hawks the advantage.

With the Terras rocked, Whitehawk went in search of a second. West’s cross was punched away by Matthews and Javier Favarel fired narrowly over on the follow up.

Whitehawk’s Mills then ran in on goal and lobbed the ball over Matthews but his attempt failed to find the target.

With 20 minutes gone, the Terras tried to fight back. Davis fired a powerful shot on goal but it deflected just wide. Stuart Fleetwood then struck well off target.

The hosts then continued to get back on the front foot, Mills forcing a great save by Matthews from just eight yards out.

The Terras were also given a let-off just before the break as a whipped ball by West was met by an unmarked Ramon Marimon, but he nodded it straight at the goalkeeper.

The home side picked up where they left off after the interval and it was Mills who had the chance to double the Hawks’ advantage. His effort took a deflection and finished just off target.

The Terras then looked to the bench to change the flow of the contest as Aaron Rodriguez replaced Smith just short of the hour mark. Whitehawk’s Ahmed Abdullah fired just wide of Matthews’ goal though a crowded penalty area as the home side kept knocking on the door for a second.

Yetton was then introduced for the away side and, just after he came on, the game as a whole came to life.

Davis walloped the ball into the net to make it 1-1, but the Hawks then hit back almost straight from kick off with Mills stroking the ball into the Weymouth net for 2-1.

But Matthews’ men were far from done and it was that man Yetton who made the impact.

His desire to get to a ball before Munoz meant the keeper brought him down in the box.

Up stepped Shephard to convert from the spot three minutes from time to keep the Terras in the hat and set up the midweek replay.
