WEYMOUTH 1

WHITEHAWK 2

A SUBLIME free-kick from Whitehawk’s experienced defender Dan Harding settled a cut-and-thrust Trophy replay at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

Weymouth were more than competitive throughout the night and took the lead through a Charlie Davis penalty, but it was not to be for the hosts as two second-half goals, the first coming from Ramon Aldavert, proved enough for the Hawks to progress.

The Terras went into the contest having made three changes from the starting XI that drew 2-2 to earn a replay with the Hawks on Saturday.

Jake Wannell was ruled out with a calf injury having failed a fitness test ahead of kick-off. Chris Shephard was out with illness, and Dan Smith was also out of the match-day squad having been released by the club.

That meant into the starting XI came full-back Ashley Wells,

midfielder Billy Lowes and winger Aaron Roriguez, who impressed after coming off the bench at the weekend.

There was also call-ups to the bench for reserve-team duo Dom Panesar-Dower and Sean Stewart. Sam Jordan was also recalled, as was Dan Thomas.

With Wannell out, Calvin Brooks moved back into centre-half with Wells coming in on the right of the back four.

Whitehawk went into the encounter without one of their joint-managers from Saturday, Ben Strevens took up a role with Eastleigh following the weekend’s encounter.

Goalkeeper Adri Munoz, who gave away the last-gasp penalty in the first fixture between the sides, was dropped to the bench in place of regular number one Ross Flitney.

Flitney looked on as the Hawks had the first chance two minutes into the game.

Glen Southam’s low drive from the edge of the box had Terras’ player-boss Matthews diving to his left, but it flew into the side-netting.

Paul Reid, who took up a role as joint-manager, then put in a last-ditch challenge at the other end to keep the score at 0-0 after keeper Flitney was left in no man’s land.

With the game failing to really catch fire in the opening 20 minutes, long range efforts were the order of the day. Whitehawk’s Reece Connolly trapped the ball 25 yards out and shot wide on the turn.

But with the Terras’ first real chance to get at the Hawks’ defence, the visitors failed to deal with a powerful run from Ben Thomson.

He drove inside the box and was sandwiched between two defenders. Referee Gary Parsons immediately pointed to the spot.

Up stepped Davis to convert from 12 yards, despite Flitney getting a hand on the effort, for 1-0.

The Hawks then had a huge chance to get back in it just five minutes later. A free-kick from deep was headed into the path of Connolly, he stabbed at goal from close range but the effort was straight at Matthews, who gathered cleanly.

Thomson, who was causing problems for the Hawks’ backline when given the opportunity, then broke clear and worked Flitney on the angle, but the keeper stood up to the task.

Whitehawk’s woes then got greater as joint-manager Reid had to hobble off with an injury, forcing a reshuffle in the visitors’ defence.

But, with the first chance after the restart, Whitehawk drew

level. An inswinging corner

found Ramon Aldavert, who stooped to head past Matthews

on 49 minutes.

The Terras tried to respond with a couple of dipping efforts from Davis, but they then looked to change it from the bench. With 16 minutes left, on came Stewart Yetton for Rodriguez.

Then, disaster struck.

Stephane Zubar tussled with Hawks’ frontman Danny Mills and was adjudged to have brought him down – referee Parsons awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box and brandished a straight red card to the centre-half – he had also already been booked.

And from that free-kick, former Southampton, Brighton and Leeds United man Harding bent it into the corner to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead 10 minutes from time.

Sam Jordan was then brought on in place of Wells as the hosts went all out attack, but they just could not muster a final push and were left to make their exit from the Trophy.
